Weatherization & Energy Audits in Chicagoland | BPI & EPA Certified | Alpha Development Group
Premium Add-On · Fully Certified

Weatherization that pays for itself.

We are one of very few Chicagoland contractors holding BPI, EPA Lead-Safe, USGBC, RESNET, and DET Verifier certifications. That means we can air-seal, insulate, and energy-audit your home to a standard most general contractors cannot match. And IRA tax credits often cover most of the cost.

What is weatherization?

Weatherization is the umbrella term for the work that makes a home tighter, better-insulated, and more comfortable. The three biggest pieces are air sealing (closing leaks where conditioned air escapes), insulation (slowing heat transfer through walls, attics, rim joists, basements), and diagnostic testing (using a blower door and infrared camera to find hidden problems).

Done well, a weatherized home stays warm in January without the furnace running constantly, stays cool in August without overworking the AC, has fewer drafts, less ice damming, and a more even temperature room-to-room. It is also healthier — less moisture migration means less mold risk, and proper ventilation means better indoor air quality.

Done poorly, weatherization can actually make a home worse. Over-tightening without proper ventilation traps moisture. Wrong insulation in the wrong assembly creates condensation and rot. This is why certifications matter. BPI (Building Performance Institute) is the gold standard, and we hold it.

Certifications That Actually Matter

Most contractors say they "do insulation." We hold the credentials that prove we know how.

BPI

Building Performance Institute — building science certification

EPA Lead-Safe

Required for any pre-1978 home work involving paint disturbance

USGBC

U.S. Green Building Council member — LEED-aligned practices

RESNET

Residential Energy Services Network — HERS rating capable

DET Verifier

Duct & envelope testing — Illinois energy code compliance

ASCLI

Approved State Contractor — income-eligible weatherization programs

How weatherization saves you money

Three different payback streams, all stacking on top of each other.

Lower utility bills, every month

Most Chicagoland homes lose 25-40% of their conditioned air through gaps and under-insulated assemblies. Air sealing and insulation typically cuts heating and cooling bills by 15-30%. That is recurring savings, every month, for as long as you own the home.

IRA federal tax credits

The Inflation Reduction Act provides up to $1,200 per year in federal tax credits for energy-efficient home improvements (insulation, air sealing, windows, doors, energy audits). Heat pumps and HVAC qualify under a separate credit up to $2,000. We will document everything you need at your project.

Home value & comfort

A weatherized home with a HERS rating sells faster and for more, especially as buyers increasingly factor energy costs into purchase decisions. And you live in a more comfortable home in the meantime.

The Best Time to Do It

Bundle weatherization with your remodel

If we are already in your home for a kitchen, bathroom, or basement project, adding weatherization is the most cost-effective time to do it. The walls are open. The crew is mobilized. The dust barriers are up. We can air-seal the rim joists during a basement finish, blow insulation into accessible attic spaces during a kitchen ceiling rebuild, or upgrade insulation in any wall we are opening up. You save the separate mobilization fee, you avoid disrupting your home twice, and you get a more comfortable, more efficient home when the project is done.

Weatherization FAQ

What is weatherization?

Weatherization is sealing and insulating your home so it loses less heat in winter and stays cooler in summer. It typically includes air sealing, insulation upgrades, duct sealing, and a blower-door energy audit. Result: lower utility bills, more comfort, smaller carbon footprint.

Are there tax credits for weatherization?

Yes. The Inflation Reduction Act provides federal tax credits up to $1,200/year for energy-efficient home improvements including insulation and air sealing, plus separate credits for heat pumps. We will explain what your project qualifies for at your estimate.

Do I need a separate energy audit?

Sometimes. If you want maximum tax credits or a complete picture of where your home is losing energy, we run a blower-door test and infrared scan. For straightforward insulation upgrades or air sealing, the audit is optional.

What does it cost?

It depends on home size and scope. A blower-door audit is usually $300-$600. Adding attic insulation to a typical 2,000 sqft home runs $2,500-$5,000 before tax credits. We will give you an exact quote after walking the home.

Can you bundle weatherization with a remodel?

That is the most cost-effective time to do it. While we are already in your home, adding insulation and air sealing in the surrounding spaces saves you a separate mobilization fee and gets it all done at once. Most of our remodel clients add weatherization.
